Two of the file formats used in software update and coding processes for Volkswagen and other VAG Group brands (Audi, SEAT, Skoda, etc.) are “frf” and “sgo” file formats.
What are .frf and .sgo Files?
.frf: It is a software update file for the electronic control units (ECU) of VAG Group vehicles. It is often used to update the software of an ECU.
.sgo: This format is similarly used for ECUs of VAG Group vehicles. It can be used for both software updates and coding data.
What Does It Do?
These files are used when a vehicle’s ECU needs a software update or coding. This can be done to fix a fault, improve performance or enable a new feature.
Which Software Need?
The most common tool used to code and update ECUs in VAG Group vehicles is the “ODIS” (Offboard Diagnostic Information System) software. ODIS supports .frf and .sgo files and can use these files to perform ECU software updates and coding.
Software updates and coding are usually performed by trained technicians, as one wrong step can permanently damage the vehicle’s ECU. It is important to be careful when performing such operations.
